No Kill in Motion - Shelter New Math and When Not All Animals Count

When we calculate the Live Release Rate it is exactly what the words imply - the number of animals who left the building alive. But what happens when shelters do what amounts to "new math" and they don't count all animals? In this discussion we talk about including ORE - owner requested euthanasia - in shelter statistics, about the shelter making its own determinations about the appropriateness of euthanasia and about shelters providing this service to the public.

This discussion lasts about 12 minutes, Participating are Davyd Smith of No Kill Colorado, Alan Rosenberg of the New Jersey Animal Observer, Shirley Marsh of Yes Biscuit and Aubrie Kavanaugh of No Kill Huntsville and Paws4Change.

No Kill in Motion - Memphis Redux: Transparency and Shelter Records

Memphis Animal Services has a history of issues which have caught the attention of animal welfare advocates. Shirley Marsh of Yes Biscuit blogged numerous times about MAS over a period of years and was once threatened with litigation. MAS is in the news again, this time for refusing to comply with a request for veterinary records and claiming privilege through HIPAA. Does HIPAA even apply to animals? Is there a law in Tennessee to protect shelter veterinary records?

Participating in this panel discussion are Davyd Smith of No Kill Colorado, Alan Rosenberg of the New Jersey Animal Observer, Shirley Marsh of Yes Biscuit and Aubrie Kavanaugh of No Kill Huntsville and Paws4Change. The video lasts about 11 minutes.

The articles referred to in the discussion are here.

There are currently hundreds of communities across the USA whose shelters have stopped killing healthy or treatable pets. The shelters in your community can do that, too. If your community is not already No Kill, your shelters need to hear from you and your friends.... please get involved to save lives.
