From Bad to Worse for New Jersey's Largest Shelter System

We first reported on the atrocious conditions at Associated Humane Societies (AHS) in New Jersey in September of this year. We described decades of damning inspection reports by the State, and failure of the organization's leadership to address the concerns. Since then, things have gone from bad to worse.

Most notably, Roseann Trezza, the organization's Executive Director has been charged with 8 criminal and 8 civil counts of animal cruelty. She is expected to appear in court in early December.

These charges follow decades of violations documented by multiple state agencies that have not been addressed by the organization's leadership. Now, a petition is calling for Trezza to step down. It has already gotten nearly 4,000 signatures, amid public calls for the organization to be put into receivership so that others can be put in charge.

Take Action:

You can help be a voice for New Jersey animals. Sign the petition and then contact local officials to demand a complete re-organization of AHS. Contact information is below. Also, be sure to follow NJ Animal Observer. They have been on the front lines of this story from the beginning and post regular updates. The following municipalities contract with AHS for animal control services, and they should be working to either replace AHS, or to bring about change at this organization:

There are currently hundreds of communities across the USA whose shelters have stopped killing healthy or treatable pets. The shelters in your community can do that, too. If your community is not already No Kill, your shelters need to hear from you and your friends.... please get involved to save lives.
